Making a Big Splash: Jobs in Water Transportation

Workers in water transportation operate a variety of vessels to move people and cargo. They travel to foreign ports or along local inland waterways, loading and unloading their boats along the way. As with the other transportation industries, jobs in water transportation can be divided into two categories: transporting materials and transporting people.

Onboard: Jobs and Duties

Water cargo and passengers are transported on a variety of ships and boats. Larger vessels include cruise liners, tankers, deep-sea container carriers, and bulk carriers. Midsize to smaller vessels include barges, tugboats, ferries, luxury yachts, sailboats, and motorboats. Larger vessels carry imports and exports. Some of the most frequently imported items shipped to North America include iron ore, coal, clay, lumber, and petroleum. Frequent exports out of North America to other countries include all kinds of agricultural products—wheat, corn, barley, soy, and forest products, to name a few. Smaller vessels tend to carry only people. For example, ferries carry people across rivers. Larger ferries are sturdy enough to allow many people to drive onboard inside their cars.
